Annotation: The main objective of this study was to obtain and analyse original historical information about the Ott’s system of coordinates in the Ostrava region and evaluate its significance for the present day. The Ott’s system of coordinates was established by Ing. František Ott in the Ostrava part of the Ostrava-Karviná Coal District and gained in significance during the remediation works carried out in this region to prevent potential escape of gas. At the time, the position of the original shafts and mine outlets was determined using geographical tranformation via the identical points on the cadastral maps of the former land register. When applying this method, however, the actual position of the original shafts and mine outlets often differed from the set-out position by up to 12 metres. The presented study therefore describes the method of determining the position of original mining works with higher accuracy.
