A novel procedure for georeferencing raster images of the Third Military Survey maps from 19th century (1876-1880) is proposed in the contribution. There were several attempts to design a proper transformation model for georeferencing of these maps, but none of them have satisfactory resolved crucial problems of positional discrepancy between the old maps and contemporary maps (almost 206 m in reality). In the contribution, these problems are resolved with the aid of three approaches: huge number of control points (cca 17000), complex five-step nonlinear transformation procedure with easily tunable simple set of comprehensible transformation parameters, controlled accuracy propagation of an arbitrary transformed point. Due to these three unique features the positional accuracy was reduced to 11.8 meters in reality (0.47 mm on the map sheet). Such a high accuracy is sufficient for creating seamless map of the Czechoslovakia composed from the separate transformed map sheets. Therefore, any part of this composition can be compared to some up-to-date map source or, eventually, to another properly georeferenced old map. Accordingly, the proposed procedure was implemented as a web application on web server of the Research Institute of Geodesy, Topography, and Cartography. Consequently, any Internet user can create overlays of a region of interest from several coverages and compare them to the content of the Third Military Survey maps, e.g. with the aid variable transparency. V příspěvku je navržen nový postup pro georeferencování rastrových obrazů map z III. Vojenského mapování z 19. století (1876-1880). Bylo několik pokusů navrhnout vhodný model transformace pro georeferencování těchto map, ale žádný z nich nemá uspokojivě vyřešené zásadní problémy polohového nesouladu mezi starými mapami a současnými mapami (téměř 206 m ve skutečnosti). V příspěvku jsou tyto problémy vyřešeny pomocí tří přístupů: velký počet identických bodů (cca 17000), komplexní pětistupňový nelineární proces transformace se snadno nastavitelným jednoduchým souborem srozumitelných transformačních parametrů, řízení přesnosti šíření libovolného transformovaného bodu. Díky těmto třem unikátním vlastnostem byla nepřesnost polohy snížena na 11,8 metrů ve skutečnosti (0,47 mm v měřítku mapy). Taková vysoká přesnost stačí k vytvoření bezproblémové mapy Československa složené ze samostatných transformovaných mapových listů. Proto může být jakákoliv část této kompozice porovnávána s některými aktuálními mapami nebo případně s jinou vhodně georeferencovanou starou mapou. V souladu s tím byl navrhovaný postup implementován jako webová aplikace na webovém serveru Výzkumného ústavu geodetického, topografického a kartografického. V důsledku toho může každý uživatel internetu vytvářet překryvy oblasti zájmu z několika vrstev a porovnávat je s obsahem map třetího vojenského mapování, např. volbou průhlednosti vrstev.
