Annotation:
The article deals with the life and work of Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel, especially in connection with the East Prussian arcmeasurement and derivation parameters of the ellipsoid. The ellipsoid has been named after him. Other important degree measurements are also mentioned, concerning beside others European and Czech history. There is also a table with the basic parameters of modern ellipsoids. Článek se zabývá životem a dílem Friedricha Wilhelma Bessela zejména v souvislosti s východopruským stupňovým měřením a odvozením parametrů elipsoidu, který nese jeho jméno. Zmíněna jsou též stupňová měření, která použil k výpočtu, i další, týkající se evropské a české historie geodézie. Je uvedena tabulka se základními parametry moderních elipsoidů.
